To avoid your own "buyer's remorse," know the kind of support you need before you invest.
I think there's a big difference between a mentor, a coach, and a teacher.
I see a mentor as someone who has walked a very similar path, knows the potholes and can point and say: "oh! Watch out for that one, yikes! Go to the left of that one"
So a mentor helps you avoid them, gives you alternate routes to the destination with insights from and lived trial, error, and fail forward experience. They give answers to your questions. They help you see and choose options and reason through them. They can, often will, just tell you what to do. Mentors typically don't do accountability or hand holding.
A coach isn't on the lookout for the potholes. They might not even be able to see them in the road ahead.
Instead, they are helping you deal with the pothole while you're stuck in it. They have expertise in moving through your challenges as they happen. They may not have walked your path, but they know how to help you stay motivated and resilient, how to ask good questions to find answers inside yourself.
Coaches often provide extra support, accountability, libraries of resources you can search through.
Teachers, on the other hand, have knowledge of a topic and give it to you. Might be recorded videos, might be group class sessions, might be 1:1. Predetermind topic teaching points with stepping stones to build application of the knowledge. Handouts, worksheets, visual aids and other learning tools are often a foundation piece to this approach.
They check for your understanding, adapt to how you learn, can say things a different way... but aren't looking at changing the knowledge process or order because they are focused on things like how you need to know how to count before you can multiply!
So, as you think about what stage you are at in your business... not just years in business, but emotional stuff too, like level of excitement and/or frustration...
And how you learn...
And how you stay motivated..
And how independent you are...
Do you want yo just be told what to do?
Or do you want to reason your way through with some guidance?
Each mentor, coach and teacher approach their client delivery process differently. There isn't just one path to success.
So, I encourage you to ask your potential coach/mentor/teacher some questions about their style, their program delivery process, their support options so you can make sure THEY are a right fit for you!
It's not just about right fit clients in this space. It's about client success. And when you are the client... your success is what matters!
So be choosy, and ask questions that give you confidence in your ability to succeed before you invest.
